Cranleigh staff have been implementing the Zones of Regulation™ framework and curriculum (Kuypers, 2011) at a school-wide level as part of Cranleigh’s Social and Emotional Learning. The Zones of Regulation is the original framework and curriculum that develops awareness of feelings, energy and alertness levels while exploring a variety of tools and strategies for regulation, prosocial skills, self-care, and overall wellness.
What are the “Zones”?
The Zones uses four colours to help students self-identify how they are feeling in the moment given their emotions and states of alertness. The Zones of Regulation Poster below displays some examples of internal feelings and sorts these feelings into four coloured Zones.
What will the Zones of Regulation look like at our school and how can I help at home?
The simple, common language and visual structure of The Zones of Regulation aims to make the complex skill of regulation more concrete for our students and staff teaching them.
Across all classrooms, a set of sequenced lessons and learning activities will be taught. The lessons are adjusted based each student’s Individual Adjustments to Learning Plan (IALP) and in collaboration with an education directorate occupational therapist. This ensures it meets the student’s current educational needs, including their social emotional skills.
